Pregnancy
Pregnancy physio check
A pregnancy check involves a full history taking, biomechanical assessment, internal pelvic floor check (if appropriate and always optional) and treatment. Perfect for any new mums to be! In almost all instances, exercise is beneficial during pregnancy. However, it can be difficult to know which form of exercise will be most effective.
Often it’s dependent on the individual – what works for one person can have the opposite effect for another. Our specialist Physiotherapists offer bespoke advice and exercise programmes based around your body, your history and your needs, to ensure that you stay healthy and pain-free during your pregnancy. The sessions can also cover birth preparation and Postnatal recovery preparation.
Other postnatal services available are
- Pregnancy Massage
- Pregnancy Clinical Pilates

FAQs
What happends in the first appointment?
An initial appointment will involve a subjective assessment, carried out by a specialist Women’s Heath Physiotherapist.
In the subjective assessment, we’ll ask you a number of specific and targeted questions to help us better understand your symptoms, the underlying issue or condition and any contributing factors. (This may include personal questions around bladder/bowel function and full Pelvic Health screenings).
Depending on how long the subjective assessment takes, an objective assessment may be completed in the initial consultation or the next review consultation.
In the objective assessment, we’ll look at the physical impact of your symptoms and we’ll also assess your posture, movement patterns, and muscle and joint strength and stability, to give us further insights into the underlying cause.
If it is warranted and you consent to it, we may also carry out an internal pelvic floor assessment to assess the strength and control of the pelvic floor and the integrity of the tissues.
Your Physio will then explain the diagnosis not just of the immediate issue and symptoms but also of the underlying cause. She will then discuss your treatment and rehab plan and help you understand what to expect as your programme progresses.
What happens in an internal Women’s Health Physiotherapy pelvic floor examination?
An internal examination is the best way to assess the strength of your pelvic floor and is recommended by national guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence).
All of our assessments are carried out in private treatment rooms. The Physiotherapist will leave the room whilst you take off your trousers and underwear and lie on the treatment bed. You will be given a towel to cover your lower half. As part of the examination, the Physiotherapist will insert a lubricated gloved finger into your vagina to assess the strength of your pelvic floor muscles. You will be asked to perform a series of exercises to assess your muscle function. Throughout the examination your Physiotherapist will discuss what she is doing and make sure you’re comfortable and happy to continue with the assessment. You can stop the assessment at any point.
The assessment takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Please note that it is ALWAYS optional to have an internal examination.
Why have a Postnatal Assessment?
Even if you’re not experiencing any significant discomfort or other symptoms following your pregnancy, we would always recommend having a Postnatal Assessment. It’s a full screening and assessment to pick up any postnatal complications and issues you may have, including those that are not immediately obvious.
We recommend booking an initial Postnatal Physiotherapy consultation from 6 weeks after labour and treatment can be started straight away, so that any issues do not become chronic. As a result, you’re less likely to require extended Physiotherapy treatment, and are also less likely to need treatment later in life as pelvic floor issues are identified sooner and dealt with immediately.
Why have a Pregnancy Check?
Even with the safest and most straightforward pregnancy, the normal and natural changes that your body is undergoing can be uncomfortable and worrying. With the right support at the right time, you will be able to cope better with these changes and recover faster from their impact.
JP Physio’s Women’s Health Physiotherapists can assess, diagnose and treat any conditions or pain you may experience, during or after pregnancy.
Is a chaperone available?
You’re welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member to your appointment if it helps you feel more comfortable and supported. However, please note that a friend or family member does not qualify as a legal chaperone. JP Physio does not currently provide a formal chaperone service, so if you would prefer not to attend alone, we encourage you to bring someone you trust. Your comfort and dignity are always our priority.
